‘Sublime Mist’ is a character creation based on principles of the sublime as outlined by philosopher and politician, Edmund Burke, embodied by the natural element of mist and an accentuated 18th century silhouette. ‘Sublime Mist’ exemplifies the qualities of obscurity, power, privation, vastness, infinity, difficulty and magnificence. These traits are embodied through the juxtaposition of a steel and silk organza.
Apollo Distraught is a dance piece choreographed by Richard Alston for The Rambert Dance Company in 1982. It relies heavily on balletic movement styles and is danced to Nigel Osborne’s Flute Concerto. Alston has cast Apollo as a female with 3 male muses as teachers and 6 female chorus, a subversion of gender roles from Balanchine’s iconic Apollo. This costume re-design creates a modern interpretation of classic Greek sculpture, placing emphasis on the musculature and drape of cloth. Apollo herself shines like the sun with the muses and chorus emulating this in their clothing.

In the short film Uproot, Sharmi is a 34-year-old mother of one suffering from postpartum depression. This child was to be the thing that saved her crumbling marriage but has instead driven her and Abhinav further apart. He is dismissive of her and she has lost all self-confidence as a result. When she finds out their nanny is ‘renting’ her baby to be used by beggars in the street to turn a higher profit no one will believe her. She is at a loss for what to do, feeling extremely isolated. This costume design is from mid-way through the film.
